TRELLEBORG HOSTS NOBRA FOR SAFEPILOT TRAINING

By Tommy Mikkelsen, Managing Director of Trelleborg Marine Systems Denmark

Trelleborg’s marine systems operation in Denmark recently hosted representatives from The New Orleans Baton Rouge Steamship Pilots Association (NOBRA) for its inaugural SafePilot ‘Train the Trainer’ Program. NOBRA is the official maritime pilot group for the Mississippi River between the ports of New Orleans and Baton Rouge.

Held September 18 to 22, the training program is designed to provide attendees with the knowledge and expertise required to train their colleagues on how SafePilot’s state-of-the-art software and smart technology helps pilots and ports optimize safety and efficiency in their day-to-day operations.

Piloting requires the safest, most efficient and reliable technology. It demands exceptional performance, ease of operation and high position accuracy to facilitate optimum approach, berthing and departure. SafePilot provides exactly this but it is vital to use it correctly for optimum performance. Our ‘Train the Trainer’ Program ensures pilots from across the globe know how to use and train others to use SafePilot, to ensure the safe arrival and departure of even the world’s largest ships through the most challenging waterways.

In addition to four representatives from NOBRA, attendees included two representatives from The Maritime Pilots Institute (MPI), a Louisiana-based non-profit training and research facility that provides manned model and simulator training to the majority of pilot groups in the USA as well as Central and South America. There was also one representative from NOBRA’s dispatch and billing system vendor, Coe Solutions.

Here are a few kind words from Captain Steve Wall, Board of Director of NOBRA Pilots, following the program:

”Thank you for an informative, productive, and fun week. The training was detailed, the discussion was lively, and all of our questions were answered in full. I arrived with many questions and one-by-one your entire staff listened, researched where necessary, and answered every question.  In the South, we pride ourselves on our hospitality and I can speak for all seven of us when I say, thank you for taking such good care of us.  The combined efforts of your representatives, from all departments, was very helpful.  We can now associate a name with a face and I expect that to pay dividends going forward as we begin to use SafePilot.”

The SafePilot iOS-based software was developed in collaboration with marine pilots worldwide. Known for its intuitive ease of use, the SafePilot Software offers optional software modules that can be selected according to operational pilotage requirements. Benefits include improved accuracy, as data is filtered to only display what is relevant during each operational phase, eliminating the risk of information overload and enhanced safety through an improved situational overview and accurate, real time data.

Trelleborg’s SafePilot falls under the company’s SmartPort portfolio. SmartPort is Trelleborg’s answer to the need for a standardized way to collect and store data. It’s a technology platform that connects port operations, allowing users to analyze asset performance and apply data insights, to improve day-to-day decision making.
