TRELLEBORG DISCUSSES ENHANCING MARITIME SAFETY AT PIANC VIETNAM SEMINAR

By Richard Hepworth, President of Trelleborg’s marine systems operation

Trelleborg’s marine systems operation discussed the role of port and terminal equipment optimization in enhancing maritime safety at a two-day PIANC (Vietnam) seminar, held 14 July at Hotel Continental Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Co-organized by Trelleborg, Surbana Jurong and KASI Malaysia, the seminar discussed the latest in planning and design, marine risk assessment and vessel traffic management technology. This saw Trelleborg Regional Sales Manager (Marine Fenders, Asia) William Tan discuss the role of advanced marine fender systems in port, terminal and vessel safety.

Trelleborg Sales Director (Docking and Mooring, China and SEA) Ron Lee presented a case study on the Spirit of Tasmania II to emphasize the need for ports to adopt automated mooring to making mooring operations safer. Ron also discussed how port safety can be further enhanced by taking a holistic overview of operations, and the importance of implementing a complete port solution incorporating predictive environmental monitoring and an integrated Port System. Following the seminar (15 July), visitors also received a tour of the Saigon International Terminal Vietnam along the Cai Mep Thi Vai River, which uses Trelleborg Super Cone Fenders, SCK Cell Fenders and bollards.

To be invited to speak at the seminar is a real compliment, and testament to our industry expertise and reputation as a world leader in the design and manufacture of advanced navigation, piloting and port systems, and use of state-of-the-art software and smart technology to help pilots and ports optimize safety and efficiency in their day-to-day operations.

TRELLEBORG SUPPORTS PIANC IN EVOLVING FENDER BEST PRACTICE

By Richard Hepworth, President, Trelleborg’s marine systems operation

Trelleborg’s marine systems operation has committed to supporting PIANC as the industry body focuses efforts on evolving best practice guidance for fender systems, in an effort to drive up standards and improve safety across the industry.

Trelleborg is committed to assisting PIANC wherever possible and has been a PIANC Platinum Partner since 2014. The company recently increased its involvement with the PIANC Young Professionals Commission, in particular.

We have a longstanding association with PIANC and support the important work the organization does in setting guidance for ports and vessels alike. Recently however, we’ve really focused on backing the Young Professionals’ programs run by PIANC.

I see these as the most critical audience, since the young engineers being trained and supported now will go on to shape the future of our industry. With the world we are living in changing so rapidly, we must make sure they are well placed to evolve our industry and ensure we remain relevant within it.”

Trelleborg sponsored the 2nd PIANC YP-COM Asian Seminar in the Philippines, with our materials expert, Mishra Kumar, speaking on ‘New trends and the development of fenders’. Pablo Arecco, YP-Com Chairman also visited our facility in the Philippines with two young people from the PIANC’s Commission.

During PIANC’s Singapore Young Professional’s event the following week, Louis van Schel, Secretary-General at PIANC, and other young people from the commission were invited to Trelleborg’s marine systems office in Singapore and its fender manufacturing facility. Trelleborg and PIANC held extensive talks on the best way to approach potential updates to PIANC’s 2002 ‘Guidelines for the Design of Fender Systems’, in order to ensure falsified test certification is eliminated from the industry.

By-line: William Tan, Regional Sales Manager, Trelleborg’s marine systems operation

You may have read that Trelleborg was the official sponsor of PIANC’s latest Young Professionals-Com (YP) networking event, which was held on 27 November at the iconic Boat Quay in Singapore.

YP-Com is dedicated to the career development of PIANC members 40 years of age and younger; locally, nationally and globally. The young persons’ events are designed to encourage global participation within PIANC, and facilitate networking amongst young and senior professionals.

Guests from various fields and regions joined PIANC to share their knowledge and experience, including regional and national consultants, construction companies and suppliers.  With a number of university students also in attendance, the event had a great mix of disciplines and provided a unique opportunity for networking and sharing best practice.

I also took to the stage to discuss a range of key industry issues, as well as Trelleborg’s longstanding association with PIANC.

Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many stating what an important platform these events offer for knowledge sharing and deepening learning within the field of marine infrastructure.

I’ll leave you with a couple of words from our Business Unit President to sum up why Trellebrog feels these events are so important.

Richard Hepworth, President of Trelleborg’s marine operation, says: “We have been a PIANC Platinum Partner for over a year now, and feel it’s incredibly important to use this platform to help develop and nurture new talent.  Many of our own employees are part of the PIANC YP program, and we are delighted to continue to be able to share Trelleborg’s research and work with our industry’s new generation.”

PIANC SEMINAR A SUCCESS!

By Richard Hepworth, President of Trelleborg’s marine operation

At the end of October, we hosted a joint consultants’ seminar in South Africa with industry body PIANC. I’m pleased to report that the event was very well attended, with around 75 consultants, port authority representatives and construction company stakeholders joining us for the day.

At the event, representatives from Trelleborg discussed rubber specification, our new ReadyMoor Quick Release Hook and environmental monitoring systems, and hosted sessions on foam products and the importance of fender testing.

PIANC continues to do extremely important work, setting best practice guidance for our industry concerning the many and varied issues pertinent to waterborne transport infrastructure. As well as giving us the opportunity to strengthen our relationship with PIANC, the seminar also gave us a great opportunity to develop a better understanding of changing requirements within the market, so we can ensure we continue to work to evolve our offering to meet them.

A huge thank you to Amit Madan, our IMEA Regional Director for organizing the day.  I look forward to the next one!
