LOOKING AHEAD TO IMPA 2018

After London in 2012, Panama in 2014 and Seoul in 2016, the International Association of Maritime Pilots will hold its 24th Congress from 22nd – 27th April 2018 in Senegal. Attracting pilots and international maritime experts and professionals from across the globe, the 2018 IMPA Congress, held at the port of Dakar, will provide the platform for the discussion and exploration of key issues effecting maritime pilots, ports and harbors including best operational practices, personal safety, technical advances and innovation, and more.

At the Congress, we will be exhibiting our portfolio of advanced navigation and piloting solutions. On stand, we will showcase SafePilot, our new generation of navigation and piloting software, designed by a dedicated team of software programmers working closely together with worldwide maritime pilots. TRELLEBORG SUPPORTS PIANC CONGRESS 2018

Collaboration is a word that is becoming increasingly associated with the marine industry. We know collaboration can take many forms and examples of new and exciting commercial partnerships have featured in this blog recently. But collaboration is also about sharing best practice and working together to create the best possible future for our industry. Certainly this is why here at Trelleborg we value the longstanding and important relationship we have with industry body, PIANC.

We place great importance on the role PIANC plays in the industry as a facilitator of shared best practice, knowledge and expertise between stakeholders and we are happy to show our continued commitment to, and support for, PIANC by being a headline sponsor of its World Congress in Panama City in May 2018.  This congress is an opportunity for the many different parts of our sector to come together and debate and learn about the innovations and developments that have emerged, and in some cases already been adopted, since the last event four years ago.

This year Trelleborg is again taking an active role in the congress. My colleagues will be delivering technical presentations on the subjects of future ports and piloting in Panama and the importance of authenticating marine fender performance, including explanation of a new, more accurate verification test.

GOING GREEN!

Sustainability is one of the key challenges facing the marine industry. Being able to implement environmentally-friendly business practices is not simply a tick box exercise, it is a commercial imperative. Organizations of all kinds within our diverse sector are looking to find new ways to improve the efficiency of operations to ensure assets are fully optimized and working in as sustainable a way as possible.

The Green Maritime Forum is an important event in the calendar as it brings together experts who are involved in researching and developing sustainable solutions and enables them to share their latest thinking and breakthroughs with industry stakeholders. Trelleborg is attending this year’s Hamburg-based event and the managing director of our Danish operations, Tommy Gulhammer-Mikkelsen will be giving a talk on the future of ports and piloting, looking in particular at how automation technologies are improving the interface between vessel and port to maximize operational efficiencies.

It is these technological advances that are the key drivers in developing more sustainable maritime solutions. Real-time data capture and analysis, such as that provided by SmartPort by Trelleborg, can significantly improve port and vessel throughput and turnaround which in turn has a positive impact on fuel efficiency. Similarly, we are currently developing an Adaptive Under Keel Clearance system (AKUC) for our customers which will provide real-time measurement and take into account constantly changing environmental factors to potentially enable ships to carry more cargo, save on dredging costs and increase safety.

More efficient operations should create more sustainable operations. Technology is the enabler that can better connect the various elements of the supply chain, establishing a connected eco-system based on common standards that allows traditional and new assets to communicate with each other easily and effectively.

IT’S NEARLY TIME FOR PORT TECHNOLOGY’S CONTAINER TERMINAL AUTOMATION CONFERENCE

It’s a matter of days until the much anticipated Container Terminal Automation Conference, organized by Port Technology.

At last year’s conference, collaboration came through very strongly as one of the buzzwords of the moment. We discussed the need for hyper-collaboration across the industry, reasoning that a more collaborative approach is the only way to enable the information sharing necessary to empower the revolution the marine industry is so overdue. This year, I’ll be taking part in the ‘Intelligent Supply Chain’ panel session on day one (14th March) of the two day event, to discuss how this revolution is starting to happen, and its effect on supply chains.

The conference brings together thought leaders in AI automation from across the shipping industry to discuss all stages of terminal automation, as well as the latest cutting-edge operations along the supply chain, and how new technologies can be leveraged.

EXPERT VIEWS ON IMPLEMENTING SMART TECHNOLOGIES

Anyone that reads this blog will have noticed the focus we’ve given to terminal automation over the past few months, especially the principles and practicalities of better supply chain collaboration, and how automated technologies can facilitate and improve it.

Organized by Port Technology, The Terminal Automation and Training C-Level Networking Conference brings together thought leaders in the automation and training sectors of the port industry. Therefore, it is the perfect place to discuss the stages of terminal automation, implications on port staff training and the need for simulation to facilitate this.

We see the conference as a key event in the marine calendar, and we’ve supported it since its inception in 2016. RAISING THE BAR FOR PNEUMATIC FENDER MANUFACTURE

Trelleborg’s marine systems operation has launched a new whitepaper highlighting the impact of the manufacturing process on the performance, safety, and longevity of pneumatic fenders.

Titled ‘Pneumatic Fenders: Manufacturing Methods Matter’, the whitepaper explores the difference in fenders manufactured using the airbag manufacturing method without employing a mold, and fenders manufactured conventionally using a mold, to highlight the impact of the manufacturing process on fender quality.

Pneumatic fenders are extensively used for ship-to-ship transfers mid sea, double banking operations, and as vessel-to-berth at dock/jetties. Therefore it is vital that they are not only of high quality, but are extremely reliable, to guarantee effective performance in even the harshest environmental conditions.

Each and every pneumatic fender must comply with the ISO 17357-1:2014 standard to ensure they follow the correct manufacturing process. The major concern for the industry is that there is an influx of manufacturers employing airbag production methods resulting in fenders that don’t usually comply with all of the recommended manufacturing process guidelines or compound properties as specified under the ISO 17357-1:2014 standard.

By using the conventional method, whereby the entire fender is built inside a mold and vulcanized with it in an autoclave, a clear positive impact is seen on the appearance, dimensional stability and the bonding between layers, leading to a more reliable and long lasting fender.

TRELLEBORG RECEIVES NEW ISO STANDARD CERTIFICATION

Trelleborg’s marine systems operation has upgraded its ISO 9001:2008 certification to the new International Quality Standard ISO 9001:2015, following verification from Lloyd’s Register. Demonstrating its dedication to operating efficient management processes, this revised quality standard will aid the company in the delivery and improvement of its services, to meet changing industry requirements.

The latest revision of the ISO 9001 standard focuses on performance, and supports continual practice improvements to ensure that company management systems are used as a structural tool for achieving continually high levels of quality. Certified companies have proved they are committed to demonstrating a framework for continuous improvement, and are assessed annually to ensure company progress is maintained.

Being accredited to ISO 9001:2015, prior to the September 2018 transition deadline – something only 20% of UK companies have achieved – is a significant achievement for us as a business and one that is testament to the efforts of our transition team. Our quality management system has been developed to the benefit of our customers, while ensuring the delivery of our products and services are of consistently high quality.
