Richard Hepworth, President, Trelleborg Marine Systems

We’ve recently been awarded the contract to supply over 100 of our SeaGuard foam fenders to Brunei Shell’s Kuala Belait supply base wharf in Brunei.

I wanted to highlight this contract because I feel it demonstrates the importance of considering material selection on the requirements and merits of each project and specification. We have previously worked to raise awareness of the viable alternative that foam offers to rubber fenders in many applications, and this was a great case in point.

In this case, a fast turnaround was essential – with delivery commencing this month and expected to complete in March.  Foam fenders represent a versatile and quickly installed solution, and so met the needs of the project perfectly.

93 fenders will span six berthing spaces, with spacing of 1.5 meters, covering a length along the entire Kuala Belait Supply Base Wharf of 325 meters. We will also supply an additional 21 fenders as spares.

I really feel that the strong track record of Trelleborg, and our in depth materials knowledge, won this contract. We were previously awarded the largest foam fender contract ever, delivering over 700 Seaguard™ foam fenders and accessories to the Port of Marseille.

I’ll leave you with a few words from Steven Raaj, Operations Director at contractor Waqi Sdn Bhd, who said: “Trelleborg’s Seaguard™ fenders provided a solution that could be installed quickly and assure low maintenance requirements going forward. Trelleborg’s reputation preceded the company too: we knew that we needed a supplier with a proven track record to be able to deliver such large quantities so quickly.”
